Winter Codes Ultra HD 2021
Another tight turnaround but a fun team project. Really enjoyed the vibe on this one.
Loved having Jo Pole work with the team for the first time, a delight to learn his C4D knowledge is on par with his F1 knowledge.
Thanks Dave for another fun concept to work on.

FIGHTING SEASON | ART DIRECTION & DESIGN
I love a good back plate and this is one of my favourites. On this day, Ben King was committed to the concept and pushed to make it the best it could be.
It was bitter cold on location, we had some clean images of the street and we were all keen to get home. Ben however convinced me that if we waited a few hours, that the light would change. Reflections would ping from the street, glints from the cars, the sky would turn golden. It was worth waiting a little longer.
So we waited for the universe to turn slowly and just as Ben said, the light started to magically do everything he promised. It was worth braving the cold for this perfect back plate. Most often plates are quite boring to shoot, but they are so integral when you get into the studio and need to marry your subject to the light. Ben took the concept and crafted these images so perfectly that the compositing was a dream for me to work on. I learned a lot from just listening and taking advice.

SUMMER OF CRICKET | DESIGN DIRECTION & COMPOSTING
How do you shoot a cricket promo in the midst of a pandemic, when you can’t access the talent all in one studio? Dave came to the team with a clever concept that leant on existing photography, a dash of green screen and some super cute childhood look-a-likes…. plus some remarkably talented child extras that might happen to be my very own offspring and their best buds from school.
Thanks to Rona and new ways of working, the VFX team didn’t get to drink one drop of coffee together during the two week turnaround on this project.
Hooray for finally working the remote lifestyle dream…. Boo for the demise of the 2pm coffee train.

UPRIGHT KEYART | ART DIRECTION
I love that I get to make pictures for a living. This image more than most. It’s exciting to have an idea pop into your head… then a year later see it realised through the wonderful collaborations.
The idea was simple, the characters worlds had been turned upside down in the script. So visually they would be cast upside-down but but upright. I thought maybe handstands against a wall might work to shoot upside down hair. It turns out the safest way to shoot upside down hair is to rig the someone by their feet and hang them upside down of course. Silly Sally why didn’t you know that? Very glad to have an amazing production team who were able to make this happen.
Fortunately Mr Minchin also was onboard for this concept from the very beginning. Working through brainstorming rounds with Tim for promo and key art, the upside down upright idea was a tick from early on. I’m truly grateful that he and Milly were willing to hang upside down 3 meters off the floor. Dylan Fryer also did a fantastic job bringing the concept to life through many rounds of tweaks and approvals. Gratitude plus!

LAMBS OF GOD | ART DIRECTION & DESIGN
A collaborative project that involved many concept contributions from all of the Foxtel Creative team. Lambs of God is an intriguing mystery that needed a delicate interpretation. Not too religious, a touch of mystery and sense of fairytales. Strong women and an unexpected kidnapping. A simple image was needed to showcase the international cast and govern interest.

THE END - KEYART CONCEPT & ANIMATION
The End is a brave commission for Foxtel. The story of a family plunged into dealing with life’s difficult issues. Family conflict, sexuality, relationships and moral questions around euthanasia. A Very sensitive subject matter to release and market during a pandemic.
The simple concept of this family stuck together in deep water struck a chord with the show producers. Dylan Fryer did an amazing job bringing the key art to life and massaging it through the many rounds of approvals. I loved animating the key art and teaser for the campaign.

CRICKET SUPERSTAR | VFX
Every year there is at least one project with the tightest of turnarounds. This was one of those. Pesky rain shaved off a lot of time from the schedule. I don’t know how, but the team rallied together and we managed to turn this spot around in a week from the footage hitting our desks to TX. There was no sleep, lots of coffee and love in this project….
Geek Notes - The grass plate beneath the boys bowling is one of my most favourite bits of footage I’ve worked with. I love organic pixels, and these were perfect. A long beautiful track along clean grass. Camera tracked to become the base for all the movement of the stadium unfolding.

THE CONTENDER | ART DIRECTION & VFX
We learned on this shoot that kangaroos don’t like hop directly in front of the giant green screen that you have set up for them. They like to hop all over the set and the best you can do, is chase them with the camera.
So in a time before Mocha, the team and I spent countless hours rotoscoping that kangaroo. One month after the launch, Adobe released the roto brush in After Effects. I cried. But we won a stack of awards. So yay!

FOX8 REBRAND 2014 | DESIGN DIRECTOR
Two months is a tight turnaround for a rebrand.
The team brought concepts to the table quickly and Morteza Shabake shone through with the simplicity of the ‘slash’ concept. Breaking down the FOX8 logo to one element, that was progressive, always leaning forward with an eye on the digital future. Morteza was new to the team and it was a pleasure to direct the development of his concept to fruition. It was an intense blast on the tools for the team to get the job done and on-air. Some beautiful 3D work from Geoff Thomson & Tristan Brittaine. A bazillion executions for marketing by Nat Horak.

A DECADE AT CHANNEL NINE
I started in television as a junior burger at Channel Nine Sydney in 1999. I worked there for 10 years and loved it. I’m grateful for everything I learned while working in News, Production & Promos. In particular, working with the team at Wide World of Sports. There is something quite special about live sports tv.
Most of the work here is from a time of Paintbox FX, Avid Illusion, shake, Lightwave and an early dabbling with After Effects. It was a time of anamorphic nightmares, field issues and archiving your work to Beta tapes. Back at the turn of the century, we even had to learn new software from actual books. Online tutorials didn’t exist.
There is some terribly embarrassing 3D in here too.
ROVE LA SEASON 2 LAUNCH | VFX
Karen came to our team with the idea ‘Anything is possible in Hollywood’ for Rove’s second season of Rove L.A. I learned on this job that anything is possible when you work with an awesome team.
This was the tightest shoot and somehow we managed to get Rove with a car on fire, in 20 different positions for his ‘Malkovich’ moment, jumping and hanging on green screens. There is so much to be said for Karen’s excellent direction and the production management. Rove was the ultimate professional and ploughed through everything we needed.
Working on the post was a ball with everyone stepping up to contribute. There were a few late nights to make deadline and we figured out that Geoff Thomson should never eat a full bag of Allens snakes in one hit, or shit gets weird.

AUSTRALIA’S NEXT TOP MODEL CINDERELLA | VFX
In 2012 Sony announced their first 4K television. The team geeked out and we decided to push ourselves to try and make our first 4K content. Everything was shot 4K anyhow, maybe our chunky silver macs could do it.
Beautiful art direction and design lead by Leo Nguyen.
Two awesome achievements sprouted from this creative. Firstly Leo won the Promax WORLD Rocket Award (he now works in New York). Secondly the promo was featured at SMPTE on those very new shiny Sony 4K televisions. Francesca infamously broke down on the SMPTE conference floor crying ‘It’s so high res… I can see my tears…’

RHOM S4 KEYART | ART DIRECTION & DESIGN
The challenge was set.
Seven alpha women in a portrait layout, who need to look like they are walking out of a giant spaceship handbag… that actually doesn’t look like a spaceship, just incase the viewer doesn’t undestand it out of context to the rest of the campaign.
Sometimes you just never know what sort of wild briefs will land on your desk. This one was fun but challenging. I think we nailed it. Kudos to Tiffany Law who also worked through many alternative key art options too.

SIMPSONS MARATHON SET DESIGN
Mid Thursday afternoon, Sven came to me and said ‘the agency something something, can’t make the sets, blah blah, the shoot is on Tuesday…’
Action Stations. Based on some reference material Sven liked it was a team effort to create a wall of Simpsons characters and five giant standing Simpsons heads.

The launch promo was a lot of fun, some very realistic looking 3D sperm crafted by the amazing Iaan Greenhalgh, that was impressive enough for Maxon to include on the 2010 C4D yearly showreel. How far C4D has come since then.
